Orlande de Lassus, Super flumina Babylonis, is the anthem for Evensong this coming Sunday. Super flumina Babylonis are the opening words of psalm 136 (137) which speaks of the conditions of the Hebrews taken into captivity in Babylon (586 BCE) who, out of sadness, no longer want to sing of their homeland but are requested to do so by their captors. Between last Sunday and this, all five movements of Percy Whitlock, Plymouth Suite, will have been performed as organ voluntaries at Christ Church Cathedral. Patrick Wedd, music director, Christ Church Cathedral, will give an organ recital this Sunday, July 19, at 7:00 pm on the Casavant organ, Basilica of Notre-Dame, as part of the Festival international des grandes orgues de la basilique de Notre-Dame, Montreal. The programme will include works by Patrick Gowers, Percy Whitlock, Herbert Howells and Francis Jackson. Free admission / voluntary offering.

Olivier Latry, one of three titulars of the 1887 Cavaillé-Coll organ of the Cathedral of Notre Dame, Paris, will give a free concert, co-sponsored by the McGill Summer Organ Academy and Les Concerts Lachine, on Thursday, July 16, on the 1920/2002 Casavant organ of Sts-Anges-Gardiens in Lachine, at 8:00 pm. Works by Saint-Saëns, Franck, Widor, Vierne, Messiaen, Escaich, Guillou; along with improvisation.

The Annual International Jazz Festival of Montreal is underway. This Sunday at Christ Church Cathedral there will be a celebration of the third annual Jazz Mass with the Revd Canon Tim Eliot and the Brian Barlow Quartet. In the afternoon instead of evensong there will be Jazz Vespers.
