1892 Father Willis organ, Hereford Cathedral

The organ voluntaries for Choral Evensong of the coming Sunday are the work of Peter Racine Fricker.

Listen to a virtual performance (Hereford Cathedral Willis organ sample set) of Fricker’s Five Short Pieces.

The "Five Short Pieces" date from 1981, and are published by Augsburg.

1 - "Little Toccata" is for manuals only, and begins with mixtures, before building to full reeds with 16' stops.

2 - "Meditation" uses quiet stops, essentially 2 voices in each hand, over drone basses in the pedal, played on 8' stops.

3 - "Scherzino" uses soft 8, 4, and 2' stops on the Swell for the first second, Great flutes 8 & 4' in the middle, and returns to the sound of the first section with the Tierce (from the Choir) added.

4 - "Varied Ostinato" 0 features the Flutes 8 & 2' of the Choir in the right hand, while the Swell reeds supply the melody. The Pedal has some pizzicato effects.

5 - "Ceremony" uses the Full Swell and Great chorus with swinging, "ceremonial" rhythms. It builds to full organ over a wonderful final chord of A major in the manuals over C natural in the Pedal!
