The body’s breath is the very basis of singing; so is it the foundation for brass and woodwind instruments. It is not surprising, then, that composers have found that choral and wind sonorities are naturally compatible. We are pleased to present two classic Mass settings, one romantic and one more modern. It is fortunate that both Bruckner and Stravinsky, each prolific composers in many styles, devoted much of their creativity to choral music; the great E-minor setting of Bruckner is a fine example of his rich romanticism, while Stravinsky’s neo-classic Mass of 1948 eschews any excess in favour of clarity and colour. We complement them with several of each composer’s unac
companied motets. In this way we present an evening of rarely heard masterpieces born on the very breath of life.
By way of preparation , listen free online:

Igor Stravinsky, Messe pour chœur mixte et double quintette à vents performed by SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart and the Ensemble intercontemporain,  George Benjamin, direction [YouTube]

Anton Bruckner, Mass in e-minor, performed by the Bavarian Radio Chorus, Bavarian Symphony Orchestra and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Winds [musicMe]
